The History of Hittisleigh

Hittisleigh is mentioned in the Domesday Book.

It is believed that the pirate known as Black Sam was born in Hittisleigh in 1689. A Samuel Bellamy was christened here on the 18th March. If this was the same Samuel Bellamy that went on to marry Mary Hallett in Cape Cod, Massachusetts and become a pirate, he ultimately died in a shipwreck in 1717.
