The History of Hittisleigh

Hittisleigh is mentioned in the Domesday Book.

It is believed that the pirate known as Black Sam was born in Hittisleigh in 1689. Although there was a Samuel Bellamy christened here on the 18th March, there does not appear to be anything to definitively tie that Samuel Bellamy to the one that married Mary Hallett in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, went on to become a pirate and ultimately die in a shipwreck in 1717 apart from the ages of the two being similar.
